1.
What is WebCT?
WebCT is a tool that facilitates the creation of sophisticated World Wide Web-based educational environments. It can be used to create entire online courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses. WebCT offers a password-protected environment for all online courses, which is only accessible to registered students, the instructor, and the administrators. WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). The log in ID for this account is usually your first and last name separated by a period. For example John Doe's login ID would be, "john.doe". If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

2. What browsers are recommended for using WebCT?
WebCT does not support America Online's (AOL) web browser.  If you are using AOL as your internet service provider, you will need to download and install Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 8 or earlier versions.

3.
How do I get a WebCT account and login?
A UMaine WebCT account is automatically created for you after registering for a course that requires the use of WebCT. WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). The log in ID for this account is usually your first and last name seperated by a period. For example John Doe's login ID would be, "john.doe".If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

4. Where do I go to access the course website?
The listing of web-based courses is located at hhttp://studentrecords.umaine.edu/soc.htm. Select "web based courses" from the custom search area of the page to return a list of UMaine online courses. Each course will have a web page address associated with it. These pages can be used to locate more info about the requirements for each course.

5. I don't have a User ID or Password to add a class to your account?
WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

6.  I was sent or created a WebCT user name and password, but they don't work. Why is that?
User names and passwords in WebCT are case sensitive - meaning that upper and lowercase letters must be typed EXACTLY as the username and password were originally created and sent to you. If you are typing the user name and password exactly as it was sent to you and you are still having problems logging in, please email our help line at help@umit.maine.edu or call toll free at 1-877-947-HELP (4357) for assistance. Remember. WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

7. Where do I find assignments on the course website?
The location of assignments on the course website varies depending on how the professor has set up the course, but for the most part, assignments can be found either on the syllabus webpage or in the WebCT calendar tool. Due dates and explanations of assignments will usually be clearly marked here as well.

8. Help, I am unable to take my test on WebCT!
First, make sure that you are attempting to access your test within the time the exam is open. Your professor should have informed you of the dates and times the exam is opened. If you are accessing the exam at the correct time, and your user ID or Password is not correct, contact your professor and inform them of the situation, and also contact the Help Center at help@umit.maine.edu or call toll free at 1-877-947-HELP (4357) for assistance.

Remember, WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

9. The professor of the course says that he/she has changed the course website, but I can't see the changes that he/she made. What's going on?
Most likely the problem here is that your browser is caching files from the web. Caching basically saves the web page to your computer so that you are saved time each time you visit the page. Unfortunately, caching also causes visitors to see the older version and not be able to see any updates for the site. The solution to this problem is to empty the cache, which you will learn to do by scrolling to the Netscape portion of the FAQ. Once the cache is empty, you should be able to view the latest version of the site.

10. When I go to the WebCT website, I receive an error message "Your copy of the WebCT license is invalid."  What is going on?
This is not a problem with your computer. We are in the process of switching courses from one server to another, and that your course simply has not been moved yet.

11. I am experiencing a problem that is not listed above, what should I do?
If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed above, or your professor is unavailable to help you, contact the helpdesk at 1-877-947-HELP or via email at cedtechhelp@umit.maine.edu. Please remember that you must supply the helpdesk with the following information in order for them to assist you as efficiently as possible:

1)    Your first and last name

2)    Your professors name

3)    The title of your course (and course ID) that you are trying to access

4)    The exact error message that you are receiving, and what you were trying to do when you received the message.
