2. I am experiencing
a problem and want direct support, what should I do?
If you are experiencing
a problem that is not listed below or you want direct support, please
contact the helpdesk at 1-877-947-HELP or via email at Help@umit.maine.edu.
Please remember that you must supply the helpdesk with the following information
in order for them to assist you as efficiently as possible:
1) Your
first and last name
2) Your
professors name
3) The
title of your course (and course ID) that you are trying to access
4) The
exact error message that you are receiving, and what you were trying to do
when you received the message.
3. How
do I test my QuickTime streaming?
The
file that you are trying to access may not determine if your streaming settings
are correct or not. Please go to
the following URL:

here if you wish to test QuickTime playback on your computer,
4. QuickTime
movie keeps breaking up and stopping abruptly. What is
causing that?
In
order to view QuickTime movies for any of our courses, it is required that you
have a 56k connection to the Internet. If you do not have a 56k modem, you will
not be able to view the movies correctly. However, keep in mind that though you
may have a 56k modem, that doesn't necessarily mean that you are connecting at
56k. Often times, the actual connection speed for your Internet connection will
be significantly less, causing difficulty in viewing the movies. If you do have
a 56k modem or faster, and are having difficulty viewing a QuickTime movie for
your class, there are a few possible causes for this. Some causes can be older
phone lines that don't support the necessary speeds, your Internet Service Provider
having a large number of people connected at the same time, or too many people
trying to access our servers at the same time. If you can't view the movie at
one time, try connecting to the Internet and viewing the movie at a time when
less people are likely to be online, possibly late at night or early in the
morning.
5. I know that I'm running QuickTime
on my computer and that I have a fast enough connection to the Internet, but
I
still can't access any movies for my course. What could be going wrong?
It
could be possible that you do not have the proper version of QuickTime to view
the movies. In order to view QuickTime movies for our courses, you will need to
download the latest version of QuickTime to view the movies. You may download
the latest FREE version of QuickTime from the following address:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
6. I try to run a movie for my class
by clicking on the link, but rather than opening QuickTime, it opens Windows
Media Player or RealPlayer and won't play. How do I remedy this?
What
has happened in this instance is that either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player "took over" the
.mov file types from QuickTime. The way to fix this problem is to re-associate
the .mov files to QuickTime by opening the QuickTime
control panel (found under the Control Panel in Windows or listed under control
panels in the apple menu on Macs), choose File Type Associations from the
pull-down menu in the QuickTime control panel, and check make sure that
Macintosh file types is checked (you may have to uncheck it and then recheck
it
so .mov files will be re-associated to QuickTime), and close the QuickTime
control panel. Once that is done, restart your computer, try to view the movie
again, and it should now open the QuickTime player.
7. When I try to play a QuickTime
movie, I receive a 404 - not found error. What could be causing that, and how
do I fix it?
There
are a couple of possible causes for this problem. The most common
cause is that settings in the QuickTime control panel are preventing
the movie to stream. To fix this problem, go into the QuickTime
control panel, choose Streaming Transport from the pull-down menu,
and then choose "Use UDP, RTSP" from the choices, and
choose 554 as the Port ID. Click "apply" in the bottom
right corner. Once this is chosen, close the QuickTime control
panel and you should now be able to view the movie without the
404 message. If on the other hand your settings are correct and
you still receive the 404 error, then the problem may either be
with your Internet connection, or it may be a problem with our
servers. In such a case, disconnect from the Internet and try
again at a later time.
8. When I try to play a QuickTime
movie, I receive a 5408- Timed Out Error. What is causing this?
-5408 : Timed Out Error
At times a user may experience a
"-5408 Timed Out" error. Several conditions may cause this. The most
common are too many users attempting to access a streaming media file; a user's
local Internet service provider is experiencing unusually heavy traffic; or the
path to the streaming media file may contain a broken link or an otherwise
invalid file structure.
Because these conditions may
prevent the user from connecting to the streaming media file, the player will
eventually time out. Attempting to connect to the streaming media file at a
later time is usually the best solution to this error.
9. I can't
view any of the lectures. How can
I fix this?
First, make
sure that you have the latest version of QuickTime. Next, check to make sure
you are not behind a firewall of some sorts. If you do not have one on your
personal computer, call your internet provider to see if they have you behind
one.
If it is not a firewall issue, you can check to make sure
your QuickTime settings are correct by opening QuickTime and going to Edit,
then preferences, then QuickTime preferences. At the top there will be a drop
down menu. Click on it and change it to connection speed. You should see
something similar to this:

Make sure that you connection speed is set to what
connection you have at home.
Next if you click on the top pull down menu you will see
one selection called Streaming Transport.

Make sure that you have selected
the UDP, RTSP Setting, and the Port ID 554.
10. The video
on my lecture is choppy and/or my audio is not coming in.
Make sure
you have the recommended connection speed for the class. Some of the courses
offered required that you have a broadband internet connection such as Cable
modem or DSL. If your class does
not need this type of connection, a dialup modem is sufficient and a connection
of 40kbps or higher is sufficient.
11. I can't hear the lectures. Why
not?
If you are able to see the
lectures but not hear them, you may not have your sound turned on. Please make sure that the speakers (if
there are any) are turned on. If
this does not work, open up your sound menu found as a yellow speaker icon at
the lower right hand corner of your screen. Double-click on this speaker and make sure that nothing is
muted. Next, open up a sound file,
such as a wave file found under your control panel. To get to the control panel, click on the Start menu, then
click Settings and control panel is the first option. Double-click on the "Sounds and Multimedia" folder
and you will see something similar to this:

If you do not see any yellow icons on the top part of this
screen, go to the drop down menu next to "Scheme:" and choose Windows
Default. Now single click on a
sound such as "Asterisk" and click on the play button, which looks
similar to your VCR play button.
If you still do not hear any sound, please make sure that your sound
drivers are installed correctly.
12. Having
difficulty hearing the lecture because sound fades out?
Open QuickTime
and go to Edit, Preferences, and then QuickTime Preferences. At the top there
will be a drop down menu. Click on it and change it to Sound out. Change the
size to 8 bit and the Use to mono. This will decrease the quality of the sound
slightly, but will make it easier to output.
13.
The video is not coming through at all even though I have a fast enough
connection. How do I fix this?
If you are using a computer with Windows
XP as the operating system you may have to turn off the built in firewall
program. Instructions on how to do that are here:
14.
How to Remove XP's firewall
A: If you go to your control panel, open up an icon with the
name "network connections" or something similar to that. Right click on the connection that you
are going through and choose "properties". From there, you have 3 tabs at the top of the window. Choose advanced and where it says
"Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this
computer from the Internet", make sure the box is not check. This should fix your problem.
15.
I get a message stating that RealPlayer cannot play the lecture that
I have
opened, but I want QuickTime to open the lecture up. How can I fix this?
If RealPlayer is taking over some of the video, then you need to make QuickTime
the default viewing device for these lectures. Go to you Control Panel and open up QuickTime. From there, you should see something
like this:

Choose "file type associations". Make sure that the check box next to
"Macintosh file types..." is checked off. This should solve your problem.
